Let it Rain!

Jun 08

I am sitting here on my front porch while the kids are playing listening to the thunder and asking God to bring some rain.  I have been reading through the book of Joshua in the Old Testament, and rain plays a huge emphasis in the life of the people in the Bible.  Here in Georgia, in the midst of a drought, we can truly relate.  We are praying for rain!

It reminds me of how utterly dependant we are on God!  I can’t do anything to make it rain outside of praying and praying is dependence upon God.

Isn’t that where God wants us to be!

We live in a culture that emphasizes and endorses independence and self-sufficiency.  Most of the time when we want something we can find a way to get it and we can get right away.

In the beginning of the book of Joshua, he (Joshua) is leading the children of Israel across the jordan river and God tells Joshua to build an altar of stones at Gilgal (read here) AND Joshua builds an altar of stones in the middle of the Jordan river (read here) while the water was held back.

Why in the world would Joshua build an altar of stones in the middle of the Jordan river during flood season that would be covered up as soon as the water flowed freely again?

I believe that in the middle eastern culture the reality of drought was a seasonal and yearly issue.  They were completely and utterly dependent upon God to bring rain to help them survive.  Joshua knew that the flood season would pass, the river would shrink back to flowing within its banks and drought would again become a reality in the land.

When the river continued to recede the stone altar would begin to show above the water line.  This stone altar would become a symbol of God’s faithfulness in the lives of God’s people.  It would remind them that God was, in fact, in control and that He would again bring the rain that would ultimately bring life.

As I am finishing this post it is beginning to rain!  God is faithful!

Do you need God to “bring rain” in your life?  Let your needs be a reminder of our utter dependence upon Him.  Ask Him, talk to Him.  He is good.  He is faithful.
