IMPOTENCE!
March 1st, 2007 Posted in Culture, EntertainingThis past Monday night I had the unusual and out of the ordinary opportunity to actually go out with my wife on a date without the kids!
Can I just tell you that I was like a kid in a candy store! I didn’t realize it until THAT day that we were really going to go out on a date by ourselves…..WITHOUT THE KIDS! I turned to my wife and said, “You are kidding….We are really going out by ourselves?” “When do we have to be home?”
Don’t get me wrong, I love my kids, but I REALLY love my wife! It is simply not too often that we get to go out by ourselves, so I was really excited.
We went to eat and actually had uninterrupted conversation and then we went to a movie. The movie was “Amazing Grace” the life story of William Wilberforce. It was awesome!!! I highly recommend it. The reason I recommend it deals with the passion of William Wilberforce. He devotes his life to the abolition of slavery in Great Britian. He spends his entire life trying to end the slave trade from Africa and freeing these precious people that are created in the image of God.
It reminded me of why my marriage to Jill Butcher is so awesome. Don’t get me wrong, marriage can be hard at times. I imagine that we have the same marriage issues that many other marriages have. I tell her what to do and she doesn’t do it! Just kidding (just a little submission humor). We have our moments where everything isn’t hunky dory, but you know what makes our marriage great? We share a mission together!! We share the same passion that drove William Wilburforce, the freeing of slaves!!!
The difference is this, our passion and mission is to see people freed from spiritual slavery. That is why we would sacrifice everything we had built in our ministry to this point in life and do an idiotic thing like plant a church. We knew that we potentially could be more effective in our mission and passion by planting a church. We wanted to see people set free through the power of Jesus!!
Most marriages fail not because of the daily problems and struggles that all marriages have. Most marriages fail because they don’t have a shared dream that gives them passion to rise above the daily difficulties in marriage! It’s simple; if God gives you a shared dream and passion that is bigger than yourselves, the daily struggles will pale in comparison to what God has for you to do together.
Ask God to give you a dream to free people and join us at Church at the Grove and we will make this dream a reality together.
Oh Yeah, I was going to write about IMPOTENCE!
Isn’t it something that we have seen the day in our culture where there are TV commercials advertising prescription medicine for men who…..well you know……have problems!!!!
I read recently where a pastor defined Impotence as “having all the equipment but lacking the passion to perform.”
That is where we are in our marriages today!! We have the right equipment, but we don’t have a shared passion that is bigger than us and bigger than our marriage to help us make it. We can conquer IMPOTENCE in our marriages through a shared vision to reach people that are disconnected from God.
We are in the same situation with the church today. Churches “have all the right equipment, but lack the passion to perform.” That is called spirtual IMPOTENCE!
The church must have a passion like William Wilberforce to free people from captivity and slavery. That kind of passion will keep churches from being divisive and IMPOTENT.
Make a decision to join the fight for the souls of people. Thank God for William Wilberforce!
