CATGrove is now over 11 months into the adventure of beginning a new church!  Over the next few weeks I will reflect on the past year and revisit the MISSION of our community of faith.

What is the mission of our church?  First, we must ask, “What is the Church?”  The church is not a building, a piece of property, a club, or an address.  The church is people who follow Christ!  See this POST for further explanation……

There is a cultural expectation that has evolved in America that demands the “unchurched, disconnected, and unconvinced” people to “come to us”.  Credibility is given to a “church” when it has property, building and sign out front and there is an often unstated expectations for people to simply “show up”.

When many Christians in our culture hear the word “mission” they picture someone “going” somewhere to share the message of Jesus.  Rather than “going” to share Jesus with our friends here in America, we have reduced “mission” to expecting people to come to us on our terms.

The mission of CATGrove is to develop people who follow Jesus and Make Disciples.

We have chosen the main avenue to complete our mission to be initiating conversations with people IN THE COMMUNITY!

I spent much of a summer with a friend preparing to go to central Asia to live in a village where people have never heard about Jesus.  He left his life of comfort to go live in a village where he will develop relationships with the purpose of sharing Jesus of the Bible with the people there.

We should look at our neighborhoods, circles of influence, school districts, sports communities, etc as our “villages” where we GO to build relationships and start discussions that lead to the hope found in Jesus.

Here’s deal:  Everyone who ends up in a church gathering on Sunday has been invited!  To accomplish our mission we must INVEST in friendships and relationships, cultivate TRUST and CREDIBILITY, and then INVITE them to connect with others in our community of faith called Church at the Grove!

Now get out of your chair and walk away from your computer and WALK ACROSS THE STREET to talk with someone!

Today was a great day!  Think about this:

  • Craig did an outstanding job in teaching and David, Kaylee and the band did a tremendous job leading us in worship.
  • Our attendance was down a bit, but it is too early to know our patterns since everything is a first.
  • I get really insecure about our attendance being down.  I am just being honest, but I keep waiting on something explosive to happen.
  • I love our servant teams.  Thanks go out to Bill Cheek and his set up and breakdown teams, to Rosemary and the children’s ministry teams.  You guys are awesome.  Tom Kirby with the tech stuff and Lance Boyd with the sound stuff are doing a great job.
  • We need to take our parking lot, hospitality, greeter, and ushers up a notch.  I would love for someone to oversee this whole compilation of areas.  We need a head honcho that will take it by the horns and head it up.
  • This week will be a great week as we close out this series with Esther and she dealt with the bully of indifference while dealing with the bully Haman.
  • Sept 2 is a Stand-Alone teaching called “LINKED” where we deal with authentic community!  It will be awesome.  We will be doing baptism that day and having a lunch meal together.
  • Beginning September 9 we start our CanWeBringSexyBack.com series on …well…..sexuality.  We will have a full hour children’s church and we will also have some special weeks with Bible Study for our Youth.  It will be awesome.
  • The DAWGS begin their season against Oklahoma State two weeks from this weekend.  I will be dove hunting that morning by I will have my sermon prepared and back in front of a TV ready for the DAWGS and COWBOYS!

I am passionate about reaching unchurched, disconnected, and unconvinced people with the message and grace of Jesus!  Would you like to help me?

Let’s Go!!!!!!!

I had the great opportunity to help Craig and Lori Ellington (their son is Josh) help cook and serve hot-dogs for the Youth Middle School Football Fundraiser today.  CATGrove meets at YMS and is a school partner.  They are so good to us and we love partnering with them.  We hope we add value to what they are doing in investing in the lives of the young people of our community.

This was also the first time we were able to share our personalized water bottles with the CATGrove logo.  Check them out below.

If you are interested in your own water bottles with your logo you can email me russ AT churchatthegrove DOT com or post a comment on the blog with your info and I will get the information on our source to you.

There is nothing like a little watermelon in the heat of August!  Why am I the last one to find out you can buy a watermelon without seeds?  What has the world come to?
